Paired maxillae help manipulate the food, pushing it into the preoral cavity where it can be masticated further. The hypopharynx, a fleshy, tongue-like structure, also plays a role in guiding food. This intricate arrangement allows grasshoppers to efficiently process a wide range of plant fibers.

Grasshoppers play a role within their ecosystems as primary consumers or herbivores.
