DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) is the fundamental genetic material for all life forms, including animals. This complex molecule functions as a comprehensive instruction manual, providing the detailed blueprints necessary for an organism’s development, growth, and reproduction. DNA is recognized by its double helix structure, often compared to a twisted ladder. This shape is formed by two long strands, each composed of repeating units called nucleotides. These proteins determine an animal’s traits, from visible characteristics like eye color, fur pattern, and body size to internal structures of organs and metabolic processes. Proteins control how cells develop, how enzymes function, and how muscles contract. When an animal reproduces, its DNA is passed from parents to offspring, a process known as inheritance.
