Healthcare providers inquire about symptoms, medical conditions, medications, and exposures. The physical exam includes checking reflexes, muscle strength, and sensory perception in affected areas.

To confirm nerve damage and determine its extent, specific tests are conducted. Nerve conduction studies (NCS) measure the speed and strength of electrical signals as they travel along nerves. Electromyography (EMG) assesses the electrical activity of muscles, helping to identify nerve or muscle dysfunction. Blood tests are also performed to identify underlying causes, such as diabetes, vitamin levels, autoimmune markers, or kidney and liver function.

Management of distal neuropathy focuses on addressing the underlying cause and alleviating symptoms. For example, strict blood sugar control is pursued for diabetes, and vitamin deficiencies are treated with supplements. Symptom management often involves medications to reduce neuropathic pain, such as certain antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. Physical therapy can help improve muscle strength, balance, and coordination, thereby reducing the risk of falls and improving mobility. Lifestyle adjustments, such as avoiding alcohol or maintaining a healthy weight, also contribute to management.

Living with distal neuropathy requires proactive self-management and consistent medical oversight. Diligent foot care is important due to reduced sensation, which can mask injuries or infections. Regularly inspecting feet for cuts, blisters, or sores, wearing well-fitting shoes, and avoiding walking barefoot are practical steps to prevent complications.

Engaging in regular, physician-approved exercise, such as walking or swimming, helps maintain muscle strength and improve circulation. Adopting a balanced diet rich in nutrients supports nerve health and aids in managing underlying conditions.
