Identifying a specific gene mutation confirms the diagnosis and helps classify the subtype, which guides the management of potential complications.

Approaches to Management and Care

There is no cure for cutis laxa, so medical care focuses on managing symptoms and monitoring for complications. The treatment plan is tailored to the individual, depending on which body systems are affected and the severity of symptoms. This approach aims to address issues as they arise and maintain the patient’s quality of life.

For the cosmetic effects of loose skin, plastic surgery is an option that can improve appearance. However, the results may not be permanent. Because the underlying defect in the elastic fibers remains, the skin can stretch and become lax again over time. Physical therapy may also be helpful in some cases to improve muscle and skin tone.

A primary component of management is monitoring at-risk internal organs. Regular check-ups are necessary to monitor the heart and lungs. This includes periodic echocardiograms to assess heart structure and function and to check for aortic dilation.
