The iris in chimpanzees commonly ranges through various shades of brown and amber. Their eyes are positioned forward on the head, a characteristic shared with humans that enables overlapping visual fields. This forward placement is a common primate adaptation that supports binocular vision, laying the groundwork for precise depth perception. The appearance of chimpanzee eyes plays a significant role in their social interactions, particularly due to their typically dark sclera. This dark sclera makes it challenging for other individuals to accurately track their gaze direction, as the iris does not stand out prominently. This characteristic can obscure an individual’s attentional focus, which some researchers propose is advantageous in a competitive social structure where concealing one’s intentions or interests may be beneficial.

The “Cooperative Eye Hypothesis” suggests that the human eye’s visible white sclera evolved to facilitate cooperative communication by making gaze direction clear to others. In contrast, the chimpanzee’s concealed gaze might have evolved in a more competitive social context, where it is less advantageous to openly signal one’s focus.
