Dietary habits also influence cavity risk. Limiting sugary drinks, including fruit juices, and sugary snacks reduces acid attacks on tooth enamel. Avoid prolonged bottle use, especially at bedtime or during naps, and never dip pacifiers in sugary substances like honey or syrup. Offering water between meals and encouraging its consumption is beneficial.

Establishing a “dental home” by scheduling a child’s first dental visit around their first birthday is an important preventative measure. Dental professionals can provide personalized advice, assess risk factors, and apply topical fluoride treatments. Fluoride, in toothpaste and community water supplies, strengthens tooth enamel and makes it more resistant to acid erosion. Parents should brush their child’s teeth until the child develops the dexterity to effectively brush on their own, around age six or seven.
