This increased viscosity means the heart has to exert more force to pump the thicker blood through the blood vessels. Furthermore, dehydration can disrupt the balance of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium, which are essential for regulating heart rhythm and muscle function. Imbalances in these electrolytes can also contribute to heart palpitations or irregular heartbeats.

Beyond an elevated heart rate, other signs indicate inadequate hydration. Feeling thirsty is a common and early indicator, often accompanied by a dry mouth, lips, or tongue. Reduced urination or urine that appears dark yellow and has a strong smell can also signal dehydration.

Individuals might also experience headaches, fatigue, or dizziness. Other physical manifestations can include dry skin, which may feel less elastic, or sunken eyes. These symptoms can vary in intensity depending on the degree of fluid loss.

Preventing Dehydration

Maintaining proper hydration involves consistent fluid intake throughout the day. Most healthy adults should aim to drink enough fluids so that their urine is a clear, pale yellow color. General recommendations suggest around 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids daily for women and about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) for men, including fluids from both beverages and food. Approximately 20% of daily fluid intake comes from food.

Fluid needs can increase during physical activity, in hot weather, or when experiencing illness that causes fluid loss like fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. Water is the primary choice for hydration, but other fluids like lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, also contribute to daily fluid intake. Incorporating fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and lettuce, also supports hydration.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Recognize when dehydration requires professional medical care. Seek urgent medical attention if symptoms include persistent dizziness or lightheadedness that does not subside, confusion, or irritability. A rapid heart rate combined with low blood pressure, or a weak pulse, are also concerning signs. Inability to keep fluids down due to vomiting, or a complete lack of urination, indicate a need for immediate medical evaluation. These severe symptoms can signal a medical emergency, particularly in infants, young children, older adults, or individuals with chronic illnesses.
