Oral antifungal medications, including terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole, are frequently considered for moderate to severe infections and often offer higher success rates. These medications work systemically to clear the fungus but necessitate medical supervision due to potential side effects like liver issues and drug interactions. Patients taking oral antifungals often undergo blood tests to monitor liver function.

Laser therapy uses focused light energy to heat and destroy fungal cells within the nail, offering a non-invasive option with varying success rates. Nail debridement, the removal of infected nail material, can reduce fungal load and improve the penetration of topical treatments.
