They are often found in shallow depths, typically less than 200 meters, though also in deeper open ocean areas. Coastal vs. Offshore Habitats

These populations are larger, darker, and have proportionally shorter fins and beaks than their coastal counterparts. Their social groups can exceed 100 individuals, reflecting different foraging strategies and social dynamics. While coastal populations exhibit more limited movements, offshore dolphins can undertake extensive migrations, sometimes covering up to 4,200 kilometers in a single season.

Importance of Healthy Habitats

A healthy habitat is fundamental for bottlenose dolphin survival. These environments provide resources for their life cycle: food, breeding grounds, and predator protection. Dolphins rely on a consistent supply of prey (fish, squid, crustaceans), sustained by healthy marine ecosystems. Resource availability directly impacts their ability to feed, reproduce, and support social structures.

Habitats also offer sanctuary from predators like certain shark species. A balanced ecosystem supports diverse prey species, maintaining the food web. Without stable conditions, dolphin populations face challenges in finding sustenance and raising young, impacting their well-being.

Protecting Dolphin Habitats

Coastal development and dredging contribute to habitat degradation, altering environments and disrupting foraging areas. Entanglement in fishing gear, or bycatch, leads to injuries and fatalities.

Regulations controlling pollution, such as stricter wastewater treatment and limits on industrial discharge, contribute to cleaner waters.
