Jellyfish: A Dietary Classification
The vast majority of jellyfish species are classified as carnivores, indicating that their diet consists almost exclusively of other animals. Unlike herbivores that consume plants or omnivores that consume both plants and animals, jellyfish are specialized predators within the marine food web. Their biological makeup and feeding mechanisms are specifically adapted for capturing and digesting animal prey, making them an integral part of their ecosystem’s predatory dynamics. The Jellyfish Diet

For instance, larger jellyfish species are capable of consuming bigger prey items, including other smaller jellyfish or even exhibiting cannibalism by feeding on individuals of their own species. How Jellyfish Capture Prey
Jellyfish capture their prey, primarily utilizing their tentacles. These trailing appendages are equipped with specialized stinging cells known as nematocysts, which are unique to cnidarians like jellyfish. Each nematocyst contains a coiled, barbed thread and a venomous capsule. When triggered by chemical or mechanical contact from a passing organism, the thread rapidly uncoils with explosive force, injecting potent venom into the unfortunate prey.
This venom quickly paralyzes or kills the prey, rendering it immobile and allowing the jellyfish to safely manipulate it without resistance. Once incapacitated, the prey is then maneuvered towards the jellyfish’s mouth, which is typically located on the underside of its bell, often at the end of a central stalk or oral arms. The mouth leads directly to a digestive cavity where the captured food is broken down through enzymatic processes.
