After the Amaryllis has finished blooming, cut the spent flower stalk about an inch above the bulb, being careful not to damage any emerging leaves. Allowing the stalk to remain can divert energy away from the bulb’s recovery and preparation for future blooms. The leaves should be allowed to continue growing, as they are essential for photosynthesis and recharging the bulb.

During this post-bloom period, continue to provide bright light and regular watering, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between applications. Fertilize with a balanced liquid feed every two to four weeks to help the bulb replenish its energy reserves. This active growth phase, from late spring through late summer, is when the bulb stores energy for the next flowering cycle.

To induce dormancy, usually around mid-August to late September, gradually reduce watering and cease fertilization. Move the plant to a cool, dark location where temperatures remain between 50°F and 60°F (10°C to 15°C). The leaves will yellow and die back, indicating the bulb is entering its resting phase.

If an Amaryllis fails to bloom, common reasons include insufficient dormancy or inadequate light during its growth phase. Over-fertilization with too much nitrogen can also lead to lush foliage but inhibit flower production.

Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering, which may lead to root rot, or a nutrient deficiency. Check the soil moisture; if consistently soggy, reduce watering frequency. If the soil is moist, consider a balanced fertilizer application during the active growing season.

Pest infestations can also cause issues, with spider mites and mealybugs being common culprits. Small, web-like formations or tiny red-brown specks on the leaves often signal spider mites, which thrive in dry conditions. A sticky residue or cottony masses in leaf axils point to mealybugs. Bulb rot, often characterized by a soft, mushy bulb base and a foul odor, is almost always due to overwatering or poor drainage.
