Practical Implications for Tortoise Care

Understanding tortoise vision is important for optimal care, particularly regarding their enclosure. Adequate lighting is important, requiring full-spectrum bulbs that emit visible light, UVA, and UVB rays during the day. UVA supports natural behaviors and food recognition, while UVB is essential for vitamin D3 synthesis and calcium absorption. These lights should be positioned at appropriate distances, typically 6 to 18 inches from the tortoise, to ensure effective exposure without causing harm.

Providing dark, secure hiding spots within their enclosure is also important. These shelters offer security, reduce stress, and allow tortoises to rest undisturbed during inactive periods. Hides should be enclosed, large enough for the tortoise, and offer a cool, dark retreat mimicking natural burrows or shaded areas.
